Archaeoastrology^top^

Star Charts and Moon Stations by Steve Renshaw and Saori Ihara tells of the use of astronomy for astrological uses in Japan.

Forestry Suppliers - Where you can get a Suunto Tandem Compass in the USA.

National Geophysics Data Center - Geomagnetism - Latitude & Longitude and Magnetic Deviation for your area can be found here.

Suunto Compasses - The company in Finland who makes the Tandem Compass that I use.

Survival Topics - How to find North using the North Star.

In addition to the Suunto Tandem, use the Apple iPhone for most of my Archaeoastrological work. Go to that section of MAG for more specifics. Here are the iPhone Apps I use:

AstroMart - a free way to find out how the planets are relating (aspecting) to each other through the use of astrology today. This URL can be used both from your computer or as an App from your iPhone.

SkyVoyager ($14.99) downloadable iPhone app from iTunes , I find that is a really sophisticated way to work with naked eye astronomy. You can easily identify both the constellations and the planets on their path along the ecliptic. While it it one of the most expensive Apps I have, it is well worth the cost as you can take it outside, and with a iPhone 3GS. as you tilt it around, the screen shows you what is in the heavens directly behind it!

Archaeoastronomy^top^

Ancient Astronomy and Geomancy in Kyoto, Japan By Steve Renshaw and Saori Ihara. Useful info on how the Japanese have built their temples with astronomy and geomancy in mind. Good links to other Japanese examples.

Center for Archaeoastronomy. Information about the Center for Archaeoastronomy. Good links elsewhere.

Heavenly Mathematics - The goal of this course is to give you the necessary mathematical background for understanding what I call 'cultural astronomy', i.e., the role of astronomy in problems of general interest. This includes topics related to Asian culture and natural phenomena that are special to the tropics. After taking this course, you will be able to understand basic astronomical phenomena, and appreciate their cultural significance. Interesting site from Singapore.

Horizon Finder - This Program, written by David Dearborn, scans a greyscale image in Adobe Photoshop format, and returns a digitised and calibrated horizon profile, i.e. a file containing a list of the azimuth, altitude and declination of a sequence of horizon points from one end of the horizon to the other. The program runs on Apple Macintosh platforms only. (Sorry PC users!)

"Karahundj" Armenia's Stonehenge - These simple stones stretched out along the crest of a hill overlooking the Sissian River challenge the very dating of early astronomy and the answer to the question, "Who were the first astronomers?" If proven true, a current controversial dating of the stones at Karahundj predate England's Stonehenge, they predate the Babylonian's claim to being the first astronomers, and they confirm what some people already suspect: that Armenia is the birthplace of the zodiac, and perhaps the beginning of navigation and the concept of time.

Knowth and Dowth and Newgrange Solstice alignments - great photos! Michael Fox has done an excellent job of presenting Irish astronomy. Well worth a visit.

Maes Howe Research Project - Victor Reij's report on his work at Maes Howe. Good animated .gif of the sun passing through the chamber.

Pathways of the Sun - South African Sunpaths. Stone beings, stone giants, stone faces form part of a mysterious network of geometrically aligned Solar and Lunar observatories, over more than 800 kilometres long, that play out in a magical dance of light and shadow.
